RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am a paleoclimatologist who has made substantial advances in understanding civilisations most serious threats: global climate change, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and human-climate-environment impacts. I study the climate of the past to better understand present day climate This research improves our ability to forecast climate change and addresses key questions on the origins of natural climate variations. Current projects include:
Past climate and environmental impacts on Great Barrier Reef paleoecology (ARC Discovery Project DP200100206)
El Niño in a changing climate: novel long-term perspectives from Pacific corals and model simulations (ARC Future Fellowship FT40100286)
Past Global changes (PAGES) 2k Network: "a long-running initiative studying past global changes of the last 2000 years" (http://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/2k-network/intro)
I also have an active interest in climate science communication, including art-science collaborative projects:

Global Challenges: Next Generation Sustainable Crafting (Research Project)

Next generation sustainable crafting investigates how art can instigate ‘transformative change’ through technological and scientific literacy to promote environmental sustainability. United Nations report (2019) defines transformative change as “a fundamental, system-wide reorganization across technological, economic and social factors, including paradigms, goals and values”. The project will: (1) create and showcase artworks that respond to emerging ecological sustainability trends in creative industries; (2) advance method for eco-friendly synthesis of graphene; (3) engage the creative and STEM communities in sustainable making, climate science data, advanced materials and DIY electronics through traditional crafting techniques; and (4) evaluate the impact of sustainable crafting through qualitative visual ethnography methods, and capture the narrative of enacting change.
