RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research investigates the atomic‑ and molecular‑scale structure of functional materials using advanced neutron and X‑ray scattering techniques, with a particular focus on establishing robust structure‑ and chemistry–function relationships in battery systems. I specialise in the development and fundamental understanding of rechargeable lithium‑, sodium‑, and potassium‑ion batteries, spanning electrode design, mechanistic analysis, and materials optimisation for next‑generation energy storage.
A central theme of my work is the integration of large‑scale neutron and synchrotron facilities with electrochemistry and materials science. This approach has enabled significant advances in characterising electrode behaviour under realistic operating conditions. I pioneered the use of in‑operando neutron and synchrotron diffraction for mechanistic studies, allowing real‑time probing of structural evolution and reaction pathways that govern battery performance and durability. These contributions have shaped contemporary understanding of energy‑storage materials and informed the design of improved metal‑ion battery technologies.
My research program also supports the scale‑up of energy‑storage innovations and is strengthened by an extensive network of national and international collaborations. Together, these efforts advance both fundamental knowledge and practical development of high‑performance rechargeable batteries.
