BIO
I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences. My previous appointments were with the University of Newcastle in Australia where I attained a PhD on employment and epilepsy in 2017; and the Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) in Zimbabwe.
I have developed multiple subjects and successfully led teaching teams. I am a CPD Level 3 who constantly mentor and review others. My work has been recognised through an OCTAL nomination and Senior Fellowship of WATTLE.
I was the Academic Program Director for the Master of Social Work between 2022-2025 and currently contribute to university governance as an elected member of the Academic Senate and University Internationalisation Committee.
I have published and collaborated on 69 publications, 50 of them were peer reviewed and 15 of them in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
My growing area of research is on refugees and migrants in the pre and first year of arrival phase from source regions. In a few years, I have created stronger networks in source regions such as Tongogara Refugee Camp in Southern Africa and the Warrawong Intensive English Centre, NSW Department of Education and the African Australian Advocacy Centre in Australia and I have contributed to Australian policy through an invited submission to a Parliamentary Inquiry of Western Australia in March 2024.
I have contributed immensely in the scholarship of teaching and learning with 15 publications and 4 projects with global impact on valuing Indigenous epistemology and decolonising higher education. My most recent projects have created protocols for scholars in Australia and globally on Alternative Research Methods and Decolonised Assessment Practices. Based on these achievements, I was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Review of African Studies (2025-2027) and the African Journal of Social Work (2024-2026) and a Senior Research Associate, University of Johannesburg, South Africa (since 2022).
My most fulfilling global achievements have been in the area of epilepsy as a practitioner and researcher (since 2003), leader in the International League Against Epilepsy and International Bureau for Epilepsy and policy advocate working with the World Health Organisation.
More importantly, I have created platforms for dialogue, collaboration and mentoring, including the Australasia Africa Day Forum, the Africa Social Work and Development Network, and the Epilepsy Alliance Africa Conference.
