BIO
Prof. Sluyter is an academic and group leader in the School of Science. His laboratory is affiliated with Molecular Horizons. Prof. Sluyter undertook Honours in 1991 (University of Technology, Sydney) investigating drug resistance in leukaemia before working for 2 years as a research assistant (University of Sydney) in cancer immunology and allergy, fuelling his interest in cellular immunology. This resulted him in undertaking a PhD in cancer immunology (University of Sydney) and established his credentials as a cellular immunologist. He then worked as a research fellow studying West Nile viral infections (University of Sydney, 1999) and then P2X7 and purinergic signalling (Nepean Hospital, 2000-2007). During this second post-doctoral position, Prof. Sluyter discovered and characterised several mutations in the human P2RX7 gene and revealed their relevance to inflammation, leukaemia and tuberculosis. During this period he also discovered and characterised P2X7 on various blood and skin cells in humans and dogs. In 2008, Prof. Sluyter was appointed as a Senior Lecturer (University of Wollongong) where in addition to teaching biochemistry, immunology, cell biology and pharmacology, he continued to uncover the presence of P2X7 and other purinergic molecules on various cell types, and reveal the role of these molecules in human and companion animal health and disease including inflammation, graft-versus-host-disease, motor neurone disease, and head and neck cancer. He was an affiliate of the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) (2010-2022), and promoted to Associate Professor in 2015 and full Professor in 2020, and continues to teach and undertake research in the above areas.
