BIO

Roger Lewis continues to accumulate research achievements. Recent highlights include:

• Admitted to the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) by the Council of the University of Wollongong for a research thesis on “Terahertz Physics”. This higher doctoral degree acknowledges a significant and sustained contribution to the field over many years, including “an outstanding body of published works in highly-esteemed journals.”

• Published in the journal widely regarded as the premiere journal in physics, Physical Review Letters.

• Published in the highly-cited general science journal, Nature Communications.

• Published in one of the oldest journals in physics (in print since 1799), Annalen der Physik. Previous contributors to this journal include Heinrich Hertz, Max Planck and Albert Einstein.

Roger Lewis is a physicist. He has advanced physics teaching by successive grants and publications and is also an accomplished classroom teacher, as recognised by a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning, The NSW Minister for Education and Training & The Australian College of Educators Quality Teaching Award, and a Carrick Citation. Lewis is a lifetime member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, the Australasian Association for Engineering Education, and is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators. Senior Professor Lewis is an active researcher in the area of terahertz science and technology. The terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum falls between the infrared and microwaves. This is described in his ground-breaking book "Terahertz Physics" (Cambridge University Press, 2013). He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics and a lifetime Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society. Professor Lewis is also active in academic governance. He was previously Head of the School of Physics at the University of Wollongong and previous long-serving Associate Dean Research of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Science. He has served two terms on the College of Experts of the Australian Research Council. He was Vice-Chair (2021-3) of the International Society for Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves and is now Chair (2024-6).
