RESEARCH INTERESTS

Are you accessing this page via a cellular or Wi-Fi connection? These days most people do utilise wireless connections to access the internet, and so the chances are that you are too! Wireless communication uses electromagnetic energy to send and receive information, with a substantial portion of this absorbed by the body. Croft's research addresses the relative safety of such exposure, with the aim being to ensure that in our rush to utilise the benefits of wireless communication, we are not unwittingly being harmed by it.

Following on from undergraduate degrees in philosophy and psychology, Croft's PhD tested and developed algorithms for removing artefact from the electroencephalograph, a technique used to assess neural function. This led to postdoctoral research that tested for effects of mobile phone-related electromagnetic fields on neural function, which extended into mobile phone-related health more generally. Such bioelectromagnetic research is now the focus of Crofts work, where, in addition to further exploring the effects of electromagnetic fields on human neural and sleep function, his work now extends to cancer epidemiology, animal models of neurodegenerative disease, cellular models to explore mechanisms, and, due to the mild temperature elevation caused by these electromagnetic fields, thermal physiology more generally. Croft is Director of the National Health and Medical Council of Australia's Centre of Research Excellence in this field (the Australian Centre for Electromagnetic Bioeffects Research; ACEBR), works extensively with various government agencies, and chairs the international organisation that sets limits for such exposure, the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
