BIO

Dr Mona Nikidehaghani is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business, Faculty of Business and Law. Her research expertise lies at the intersection of accounting information and public accountability, with a particular focus on how the digitisation of public service delivery shapes accountability. Mona has published extensively on the contributions of accounting to social justice, particularly in relation to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Her work has been featured in esteemed journals, including Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Disability & Society, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Meditari Accountancy Research, and Accounting History. Her research has also drawn attention from government bodies, such as the Queensland Productivity Commission (2021) on the NDIS and the Australian Productivity Commission (2023) on unpaid carer leave entitlements.

Mona has co-led interdisciplinary research teams and has been awarded nearly $400,000 in national and international competitive grants focused on enhancing public policies. In addition to publishing in Tier-1 academic journals, she has shared her findings with broader audiences through platforms like The Conversation. Given the applied nature of her work, Mona frequently collaborates with non-profit organisations on projects aimed at improving the lives of beneficiaries and is often called upon to participate in discussions of public policy at the national level.

Her contributions have been recognised with prestigious awards, including the Mary Parker Follett Award for Most Outstanding Paper (Highly Commended) and the Best Paper Award from the Australasian Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting. Mona is actively engaged with the academic community, serving on the Research Subcommittee of the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand. She is the Accounting Discipline Research Leader at the University of Wollongong, a guest editor for the Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, and a member of the editorial boards for Meditari Accountancy Research.

Mona is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate accounting students and supervises doctoral candidates. Her passion for student success has been recognised with the 2024 University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning and the 2023 Faculty of Business and Law Teaching Excellence Award. She was also nominated for the Vice-Chancellor’s Award in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
