Mareen is Associate Lecturer and PhD Candidate in the field of international relations and human rights. Her interdisciplinary research on international (criminal) accountability seeks to understand how accountability norms are shaped through practice within domestic legal and political contexts and how they can effectively respond to international crimes. Her research assistance for an ARC Discovery project focuses on examining international and domestic accountability mechanisms to address forced displacement crimes. 

Mareen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Administration from Potsdam University and with a Master of Social Science in International Security and Law from the University of Southern Denmark. She is a Doctoral Fellow at the Future of Rights Centre at UOW, a Research Affiliate at the Refugee Law Initiative at the University of London, and was a Visiting Junior Research Fellow at the Global Migration Centre at the Geneva Graduate Institute in 2024.

She has participated in a range of national and international conferences and workshops, including track two conferences, in Australia, the United States and Europe and has conducted fieldwork trips to Senegal, Ethiopia, Germany, Switzerland and across Australia. She has previous work experience in research analysis, risk assessment and editorial work at the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (APR2P) in Brisbane and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin. Further, she has provided research and policy input to the work of various think tanks, governmental and United Nations bodies.

In addition to her research, Mareen has experience teaching various international relations, political science and human rights courses at Monash University in Melbourne, Victoria and the University of Wollongong in New South Wales. Courses include War and Humanitarianism, Peace, Conflict and Security, Global Aid and Development, Global Politics and Power, Model United Nations, Research Methods in International Studies and Politics, Introduction to International Human Rights and Human Rights and Social Justice.
