BIO
Associate Professor, Doctor Le Chung Tran (Humboldt Fellow, WATTLE Fellow, Senior IEEE) received the B. Eng. degree with the first-class honour and highest distinction, and the M. Eng. degree with the highest distinction in Vietnam. He received Ph.D. in telecommunications engineering from University of Wollongong, Australia, in 2006. From 1997 to 2012 he was lecturer at Hanoi University of Transport and Communications, Vietnam. Since 2009, he has been with the University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia. He has achieved numerous national and international awards, including World University Services (WUS) awards (twice), Vietnamese Government's doctoral scholarship, International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS), Tuition Fee Waiver, the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) research fellowships (twice), and the Outstanding Contribution to Learning and Teaching (OCTAL) award. He is the director of the Wireless & IoT (WIT) Laboratory. He is currently a Technical Steering Committee member of the NSW Connectivity Innovation Network (CIN) where he represents the participation and technical contribution of the University of Wollongong. He is a fellow of WATTLE (Wollongong Academy for Tertiary Teaching and Learning Excellency) (2019 - date). He is also the Associate Editor of the IET Wireless Sensor Systems journal (2021 - date), Guest Editor of MDPI Sensors (2026-date), Editorial Board member of Electrical and Electronics: An International Journal (EEIJ) (2016 - date), and Advisory Board member of the Cambridge Scholar Publishing (CSP) (2018 - date). He has served as a Guest Editor for several Special Issues of internationally recognised transactions, including Sensors. He has also served as a Publicity Co-Chair, Track Chair, Session Chair, Session Co-Chair, and Technical Program Committee (TPC) member of 39 IEEE conferences. At the University of Wollongong, he has served in many governance roles, including, but not limited to, School of Engineering (SOE)'s Leadership Team (Academic Integrity Adviser) (2026-now); member of UOW's Non-Traditional Research Outcome (NTRO) Verification Committee (2026-2028); member of UOW’s Education Policy and Quality (EPAQ) Subcommittee (2023-2026); UOW’s Student Academic Experience Subcommittee (SAES) (2021-2022); UOW’s Academic Quality and Standard Subcommittee (AQSS) (2019-2021); EIS AD EDI’s Champion and SECTE Coordinator of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) (2020-2025); SECTE Academic Adviser for international applicants (2016-2025); SECTE's Academic Program Director (APD) (either main or acting) of Postgraduate Coursework Degrees (2012-2018); Year Coordinators (3rd and 4th years) (2009-2011); and External PhD supervisor at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) (2018-2021). He has coordinated the establishment of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Credit Transfer Agreement (CTA) and the 2+2 dual bachelor degree programs with Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) - one of the top technical universities in Vietnam (https://www.uow.edu.au/study/credit-for-prior-learning/vietnam/hanoi-university-of-science-and-technology-hust/) - and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. He has been serving as a Quality Assurer for multiple subjects taught in UOW's offshore campuses (UOWD, ZZU, CCNU) since 2015 to date. His research aims to develop sustainable, fit-for-purpose, innovative solutions to AIoT-powered and communication/telecommunications engineering challenges through a blend of conventional and novel concepts and technologies. His research interests include 5G, AI/IoT, navigation, localisation, positioning, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, ultra-wideband (UWB) communications, space-time-frequency processing for wireless and mobile communications, cooperative and cognitive communications, software defined radio (SDR), network coding, wireless personal area networks (WPANs) and wireless body area networks (WBANs), and digital signal processing for communications.
