BIO
Associate Professor Kara Vine-Perrow is an academic leader in translational biomedical research and currently Acting Director of the Molecular Horizons Research Institute at the University of Wollongong. She leads the Targeted Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory, an internationally recognised multidisciplinary research program focused on developing next-generation therapeutics and drug delivery technologies to address major unmet clinical needs in cancer and neurodegenerative disease. Her work spans discovery, preclinical development, commercialisation and clinical translation, with a particular emphasis on pancreatic cancer and motor neurone disease.
Since establishing her independent research program in 2014, Associate Professor Vine-Perrow has built a globally connected research team that integrates biomaterials engineering, nanomedicine, pharmaceutical science, molecular biology and advanced imaging technologies. Her research seeks to overcome fundamental barriers to treatment efficacy, including drug resistance, poor tissue penetration and limited delivery of therapeutics to difficult-to-treat organs such as the pancreas and central nervous system.
A central theme of her research is the development of precision drug delivery platforms that enable targeted, localised and sustained therapeutic delivery. Her laboratory has pioneered a suite of innovative technologies, including implantable drug-eluting devices for pancreatic cancer, nanoparticle-based delivery systems for RNA therapeutics and advanced nanomedicines designed to improve treatment outcomes while reducing systemic toxicity. These programs have attracted substantial national funding, generated intellectual property and fostered strong partnerships with industry, clinicians, consumers and government stakeholders.
Associate Professor Vine-Perrow is particularly recognised for her leadership in translating medical technologies towards patient benefit. As lead inventor of multiple patented technologies, she has established the infrastructure, expertise and collaborative networks required to move innovations from laboratory discovery through to commercial and clinical development. Her vision is to create a globally recognised translational therapeutics program at UOW that accelerates the development of transformative treatments for cancers and other currently incurable diseases.
Beyond her research achievements, she is committed to building research capability and fostering the next generation of scientists through mentorship, strategic leadership and the development of multidisciplinary partnerships across academia, healthcare, industry and the community. Her leadership roles within Molecular Horizons reflect a broader commitment to shaping research culture, strengthening external engagement and enhancing the impact of health and medical research nationally and internationally.
