BIO
I am a Senior Researcher and Analyst with over 20 years of experience in health, wellbeing, and environmental management research, specializing in geospatial analytics, urban nature spaces, and protected area management and monitoring.
My work spans academia and state government, focusing on how people experience health and wellbeing in urban nature spaces and how to conserve and manage these vital spaces for a diverse community.
My research centres on investigating socio-ecological systems: How do we engage with nature? What are the benefits of such an engagement? And importantly, how do we get a diverse urban community to engage with nature to achieve social integration? And in which places do we engage and why? These are the questions that I address in my research using mixed methodologies including geospatial monitoring of people in places for nature.
I am a Vice-Chancellor's Senior Research Fellow in the Australian Centre for Culture, Environment, Society and Space (ACCESS), School of Geography and Sustainable Communities, University of Wollongong.
My current research investigates the role of diversity in the use of urban places for nature using mixed methods such as geospatial participatory (PPGIS) approaches.
As a human mobility expert, I lead research and enhance geospatial methods for people monitoring, sustainable visitor experience development and natural resource management. Trained as an ecologist, my specialities are the human dimensions of ecosystems, with work on people and animal behaviour and flora and fauna communities among other in tourism and recreations systems. I hold a PhD degree from the University of New South Wales and have published in geospatial, social and environmental science journals.
