Dr Gerry Sozio is a Lecturer in Mathematics Education in the School of Education, Faculty of Arts, Society and Business.

His leadership experience across co-educational and single-sex boys’ and girls’ schools includes roles as Acting Principal, Assistant Principal, Director of Learning and Teaching, Curriculum Coordinator, Mathematics Coordinator, Administration Coordinator and Pastoral Care Coordinator. He has also held system-level leadership roles, including Education Officer at Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong and Learning and Teaching Coach at Sydney Catholic Schools. He has served as a university lecturer, tutor and marker at the University of Wollongong as well as a Visiting Teaching Fellow at the University of New South Wales.

As a teacher, Gerry’s classes have consistently achieved outstanding results, with students attaining top state rankings across all levels of Higher School Certificate Mathematics. As an Education Officer and Teaching and Learning Coach, Gerry provided professional learning and pedagogical support to primary and secondary leaders and teachers. His contribution to education has been recognised through numerous awards.

Gerry’s research interests include investigating how principles of Cognitive Load Theory can inform instructional design and support effective teaching and learning. His work has been published in journals and presented at national and international conferences in Australia, Germany and the United States.

Passionate about lifelong learning and educational excellence, Gerry is committed to supporting the growth and development of teachers and pre-service teachers, improving student achievement and contributing to evidence-informed educational practice.
