Research Overview


  • I am an archaeologist with particular interests in settlement archaeology, stone artifacts, human–environment interactions, human evolution and dispersal in Island Southeast Asia and Australasia. I am involved intensively in various research projects, specifically in archaeological caves and rock shelters across Indonesian archipelago. I have directed the previous and ongoing excavations at Liang Bua on the Indonesian island of Flores since 2001, including the discovery of tiny human species, Homo floresiensis (dubbed the ‘Hobbit’) in 2003. I was included in the list of Thompson-Reuters Highly Cited Researcher 2014 and received a Shanghai Archaeology Forum (SAF) Field Discovery Award 2017.
