Overview


Tao Yu is a professor of civil engineering and a Co-Director of the International Centre for Composites in Infrastructure (ICCI) at the University of Wollongong, Australia. Prof Yu received his BEng degree in 2001 from Zhejiang University and his PhD degree in 2007 from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof Yu’s research is mainly in the field of infrastructure applications of composite materials, with focuses on innovative hybrid structures enabled by fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP), strengthening of structures with FRP, and advanced nonlinear finite element analysis.

Prof Yu has authored or co-authored over 120 refereed journal and conference papers and two book chapters. Many of his journal papers are among the “Most Cited Articles” or “Top Downloads” of the respective journals. Prof Yu’s papers have received a total of over 1600 non-self citations in Scopus, with an h-index of 24. Prof Yu’s research contributions have impacted significantly on both the academic community and relevant practical design guidance. The three-dimensional plastic-damage constitutive model developed by Prof Yu is capable of providing accurate predictions of FRP-confined concrete in various column forms. The model, or part of the model, has been widely adopted by other researchers in their studies on confined concrete. In addition, Prof Yu’s research outcomes on two types of FRP-concrete-steel hybrid structural members have been largely adopted by the relevant Chinese national standard. Prof Yu is also an inventor of a few novel high-performance hybrid structure members incorporating FRP.

Prof Yu has been active in the international research community through his service as a member of both the Council and the Executive Committee of the IIFC since 2014 and through his leadership of the ICCI, which he co-founded in 2016 and has since co-directed. Prof Yu is an Associate Editor or Member of the Editorial Board of three international journals (Advances in Structural Engineering; Structure and Infrastructure Engineering; Journal of Composites for Construction ASCE) and the prestigious Journal of Building Structures in Chinese. Prof Yu is also one of the main contributors for the Chinese national standard “Technical Code for Infrastructure Application of FRP Composites (GB50608-2010)”.
