Research Overview


  • Within the general area of Atmospheric Chemistry, I have research interests in reactive chemical species and atmospheric particles (aerosols) in both the clean and urban environment.
    My clean air interests are focussed at the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution station, where I am a lead scientist for spectral radiation measurements. These allow an estimate of the rates of chemical reactions, and also measuring key radiative (greenhouse) properties of atmospheric aerosols.
    As a result of this work I have been involved in measurements made on ships travelling toward Antarctica, in regions outside of Darwin, and in a number of agricultural and urban environments.

Teaching Overview


  • i teach topics within the broad remit of Chemistry, but with a particular focus on Analytical and Environmental Chemistry. 
    I have recently established, in collaboration with colleagues within Chemistry, two new 3rd year subjects outlined below.
    "Chemical Analysis and Inference", is structured to be a capstone for the BSc(Chemistry) degree, and includes a chemical investigation of a complex sample, with the work carried out in a group context and with an emphasis on communication.
    "Environmental Chemistry" is a subject designed to cover the wide range of chemical and social issues that arise in environmental issues, with an additional aspect of analysing air pollution data using the data analysis package "R".
