Overview


Stephen van Duin received a bachelors degree with honours from the University of Wollongong, Australia in 1999 and a Ph.D. degree at the same university in 2007. He originally trained as a Mechanical Engineer at BHP steel from 1991 for four years before taking the role of Project Engineer for a further three years. He later joined the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies group for Illawarra Technology Cooperation in 1997 which is the commercial arm of the University of Wollongong. As a Project Mechanical Engineer, he conducted work in the field of microwave and industrial automation research and designed several domestic and overseas automation systems.

Stephen moved to the University of Wollongong in 2000 within the role of Research Engineer in the School of Electrical Computer and Telecommunications Engineering, Faculty of Informatics. He has worked on several industrial automation projects through the Cooperative Research Centre for Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Technologies (CRC-IMST) including two successive aerospace automation projects in collaboration with Boeing Hawker de Havilland. He currently works for the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences in the University of Wollongong’s research strength of Engineering Manufacturing, maintains a significant role in industrial automation for underground coal mining industry and is currently the Program Leader for Maritime Platforms within the Defence Materials Technology Centre (DMTC).
