Overview


Prof. Stephen Pyne received his BSc (Hons) at Adelaide University (top first class) and his PhD in 1979 from the Australian National University. After postdoctoral research fellowships at Purdue University (with P. Fuchs) and Harvard (with E.J. Corey) he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Wollongong in 1985. In 1998 he was appointed to Professor. He won the A.J. Birch Medal for excellence in Organic Chemistry Research, from the Organic Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 2012 and the Archibald Ollé Prize for Chemical Literature in 2015. He has published more than 330 journal publications (h-index 42) in the areas of new methods for the asymmetric synthesis of bioactive molecules; the total synthesis of bioactive natural products, especially alkaloids; the development of novel antibacterial agents against pathological bacteria; and natural products chemistry.

Research Overview


  • The Pyne research group comprises seven PhD students and two Research Associates, some of which are jointly supervised by Prof. Paul Keller and Dr. Chris Hyland. We are working on projects in the following areas:

    Discovery of new chemical reactions. Oranoboron reagents and organometallic catalysts are beeing developed for the synthesis of bioactive natural products, drug-like molecules and novel chemical scaffolds for drug discovery (ARC funded with Dr. Chris Hyland). Research Fellow: Dr. Melanie Drew; PhD students: Brendan Bryant, Philip Chevis, Liam Joyce, Srinivas Thadkapally and Quoc Pham.

     

    Discovery and development of new antibacterial agents against pathogenic bacteria (especially Clostridium difficile and Acinetobacter baumannii) (NHMRC funded with Prof. Paul Keller and Assoc. Prof. Haibo Yu). Research Fellow: Dr. Andrew Tague; PhD students: Wendy Cun and Muni Mahadari

    Natural products chemistry on traditional medicinal plants from Nigeria and SE Asia. PhD students: Christiana Dawurung, Thanika Promchai and Isaraporn Polbuppha
