Overview


Dr. Rohan Wickramasuriya is a Senior Research Fellow in spatial data analytics at the SMART Infrastructure Facility, University of Wollongong. He has over 14 years’ experience as an analytics professional across academia and industry. He is skilled in a range of analytics sub-domains including machine learning, Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, simulation modelling and data visualisation. Dr. Wickramasuriya applies this well-rounded technical skills set to solve practical problems in application domains such as urban planning, business process improvement, marketing, agriculture and environmental management. Currently, Dr. Wickramasuriya leads SMART’s Infrastructure Simulation and Modelling research group. Prior to joining SMART, Dr. Wickramasuriya served as a Data Scientist at Singtel Optus where he led the development of predictive models for next best action marketing and championed a data-driven customer strategy.

    Current Research

    Uncovering prevalent and emerging health issues in the education sector through data analytics (Lead Investigator)

    In partnership with the Teachers Health Foundation.

    This project involves using machine learning and statistical modelling techniques to identify trends and co-morbidity of diseases in the education community.

    Digital data analytics for enhancing e-commerce (Co-lead Investigator)

    In partnership with Internetrix Pty Ltd.

    This project involves building a real time anomaly detection and insights platform for e-commerce.

    Smarter building sensor, control and data analysis systems (Lead Investigator)

    In partnership with Grosvenor Engineering Group Pty Ltd and Enviro Building Services Pty Ltd.

    This project involves accurate building occupancy estimation using machine vision, developing and testing new building sensors and using predictive algorithms to optimise indoor environments.

    Vision Illawarra: an integrated planning tool (Investigator - Integrated Land Use-Transport Modelling Expert)

    In partnership with Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama city councils, Sydney Water, Endeavour Energy and REMONDIS.

    A comprehensive, longitudinal data repository of utilities usage and operations in the Illawarra region, an online analytics platform, and an integrated simulation model that encompasses economic, demographic, land use and transport modules.

    A data-driven exploration of the impact of CEO profiles on organisational performance (Investigator)

    In collaboration with the Faculty of Business, University of Wollongong 

    Geolocating a synthetic population (Co-supervisor)

    A doctoral research project

    This project involves constructing a rich building information database, generating a synthetic population, and geolocating that population into dwellings using machine learning and optimisation algorithms.

     

    Past Research

    Real time water consumption data analytics (Academic Mentor)

    An AMSI internship project in partnership with Taggle Systems Pty Ltd.

    This project involved analysing large volumes Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) data for citywide water supply network in order to identify anomalies, forecast daily demand and help plan water supply for upcoming greenfield developments.

    Smart Infrastructure Dashboard (Technical Lead)

    In partnership with Sydney Water, Endeavour Energy and REMONDIS.

    This project involved sourcing disparate data, storing in an optimised data warehouse, and building an online data visualisation platform to explore and understand the provision and use of utilities services at a regional scale.

    Illawarra Data Hub (Lead Investigator)

    In partnership with the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN).

    This project involved setting up a data warehouse containing regional utilities data and serving this data using Web Feature Services (WFS) standards to be consumed by the AURIN data visualisation and analysis platform.

    Determining pre-harvest rice grain moisture content using multispectral imagery and deep learning (Principal Supervisor)
