The flow of simple bulk solids from converging channels.

Abstract


  • An investigation to model the flow of the continuum of bulk solids, in which the flow of coarse bulk solids represents a limiting case of the general two phase flow situation presented by the flow of bulk solids from converging channels, is described. To test the validity of the analysis, the predicted flow rates are compared to observed flow rates for a simple bulk solid flowing from an experimental variable geometry plane flow bin. On comparison it is noted that the flow rate predicted using the static consolidation stress field is approximately double the observed flow rate, whereas the flow rate predicted using the approximate analytical expression for the flow stress field underestimates the flow rate by some 50% . However, it is felt that these two approaches provide convenient and reliable upper and lower bounds to the flow rate of simple bulk solids from mass flow bins. (from authors' abstract)
