SIMPLIFIED SILO WALL LOAD PREDICTIONS.

Abstract


  • The evaluation of conservative values for the silo wall loads during all phases of silo operation are necessary for the design of silos for structural integrity. The complexity of the full evaluation procedure has been reduced somewhat by the presentation of silo design information in chart form. However, use of these charts still requires a complicated procedure relative to the use of procedures which evaluate silo pressures in terms of multiples of the initial silo wall loads. This design approach has been adopted by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) code of practice. The design factors adopted by this code for the case of flow loading have lacked theoretical development and their application is restricted to flat-bottomed silos. This paper considers the development of theoretically derived simplified silo wall load prediction procedures. The procedure outlined allows convenient evaluation of silo wall loads for design purposes. The advantages of the presentation of the design factors in chart form is highlighted by way of an illustrative example.
