PREDICTION OF FLOWRATE OF POWDERS FROM HOPPERS.

Abstract


  • Such predictions are important when it is realized that the flowrate of fine powders can be of the order of one to two hundred times less than the value that would obtain in a vacuum or below the value for a coarse bulk solid. This reduced flowrate is due principally to the effect of the adverse interstitial pressure gradients which are generated when fine powder flows from a mass-flow bin. This paper presents the basic philosophy of an analytical procedure for making flowrate predictions for the gravity flow of fine powders from mass-flow bins with significant vertical surcharge, together with mention of the extra flow-properties of the powder which require determination. Some comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental results is given.
