Multilevel inverters (MLIs) have been drawing a significant attention to the researchers to be used in grid feeding photovoltaic (PV) systems over the last few years. Modular multilevel cascaded (MMC) inverter is the promising candidate among all MLIs to provide voltage and current with reduced harmonics for grid-tied PV system. Applying control technique is another challenging part for grid-tied power system but it offers to improve the power quality of grid. In this paper, the performance of various existing control techniques in 5-level MMC fed grid tied PV system is investigated. MATLAB/Simulink environment is used for the analysis. The simulation result is studied in terms of output grid current, injected grid power, capability of handling sudden load change effect, fault handling ability and total harmonic distortion. High performance control techniques and objections associated with the control techniques are appointed and highlighted according to the simulation results.
