Effect of pH value on stress corrosion cracking behaviour of vacuum diffusion bonded joint of CLAM steel in NaCl solution

Abstract


  • Effects of pH values in 3.5 mass% NaCl solution on the stress cracking corrosion behavior of the vacuum diffusion bonded joints of China low activation martensitic (CLAM) steel were investigated by means of slow strain rate tension (SSRT) tests. Optical microscope was used to examine the microstructure of the base material and the joint, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to investigate the characteristics of the fracture surface under different corrosion conditions. It is found that the joints always fracture at the base material, no matter in acidic, alkaline and neutral solution, however, the different degrees of the necking for the SSRT joint specimens in the different solutions are observed. The stress cracking corrosion of the joint is more susceptible in acid solution than in alkaline solution. The resistance of the joint to stress cracking corrosion in neutral solution is at a medium level.
