Sedimentology of the waitemata group (lower miocene) at pakaurangi point, kaipara, New Zealand

Abstract


  • The sediments of the Pakaurangi Formation are fossiliferous and range from immature lithic labradorite-feldsarenites to immature volcarenites. They were probably derived from both andesitic volcanic and earlier sedimentary rocks. The Puketi Formation consists of immature volcarenites derived almost entirely from a nearby andesitic source. The sedimentary structures are in accord with shallow marine deposition in the Pakaurangi Formation, and terrestrial and very shallow water non-marine deposition in the Puketi Formation. Current directional features, grain-size parameters, trace fossils, and accessory and authigenic minerals were also studied to enable provenance and environmental deductions to be made. © 1972 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
