Abstract

Two major deltaic systems in the upper part of the Permian Illawarra Coal Measures, have been defined. The lower Deltaic System B was fed from both northern and southwestern sources and shows delta plain and delta front facies surrounding a large shallow embayment. The embayment progressively filled and the whole region was covered by peat swamp. Eustatic flooding of the swamp led to the development of Deltaic System C that records the main southward progradation of a molasse wedge from the New England Orogen. This produced an orderly progression of facies. -from Authors
