Theoretical and experimental study on the volumetric efficiency of screw feeders

Abstract


  • In design or selection of a screw feeder the volumetric efficiency is a principal parameter. Another important constructional feature affecting the transported volume is the clearance between the trough or tube and the tip of the flights, particularly in the "choke section". In this study two different ways to estimate the volumetric efficiency are presented. One is an analytical solution to the integral equation while the other uses the equivalent helical angle. Three other methods to obtain the volumetric efficiency are also outlined. On the basis of comparing the calculated results based on these methods, practical design equations for the calculation of volumetric efficiency of a screw feeder are proposed and the effect of clearance on the output is considered. Experimental studies on the volumetric efficiency of screw feeders are also reported. Three types of material, three troughs with different inside diameter and screws with five different pitches have been employed in the experiments. Also three screws employing different configurations to increase the screw capacity in the feed direction have been investigated. The results from the experiments are presented and compared with the theoretical predictions.
