Performance Analysis of Three Phase Inverters with Different Types of PWM Techniques

Abstract


  • To utilize the renewable energy sources efficiently, inverter is a fundamental device. A large amount of power is lost due to switching and harmonic effect. So to accumulate the energy and increase the efficiency of power inverter, an optimum point should be determined which will reduce the switching loss and harmonic effect. The aim of this paper is to ascertain the optimum condition. This paper studies about four basic types of pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques using MATLAB/Simulink software. These techniques help to reduce the harmonics component and hence the total harmonic distortion (THD) is minimized. The techniques we have studied are sine PWM (SPWM), third harmonic injected PWM (THPWM), sixty degree PWM (SDPWM) and trapezoidal PWM (TRPWM). We have tried to suggest which PWM technique is better among them by varying the frequency of the carrier signal and modulation index. This study also suggests the optimum condition for which the THD and switching loss is minimum.
