Geomorphology of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Journal Article

Abstract

  • The authors present results from a geomorphological reappraisal of the atoll based on a number of visits, and a series of surface and shallow subsurface observations. This paper looks at the development of the surface morphology of the atoll rather than the atoll's structure. All of the surface features have formed in the mid-late Holocene, over a pre-Holocene surface; there are no surface outcrops of late Pleistocene or older materials anywhere on the atoll. The authors interpretation of surface morphology and Holocene evolution have implications for the structure and longer-term development of the atoll. -from Authors
