A facile synthesis of metal complexes incorporating functionalised pyridines using a ruthenium(II) tetrakis(4-formylpyridine)dichloride building block is described. These complexes have been studied using electrochemistry, electronic absorbance and resonance Raman techniques. The molecules are able to be tuned electronically by varying the functionality attached to the pyridine in the complexes derived from ruthenium(II) tetrakis(4-formylpyridine)dichloride. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
