The diaphragm stepped thrust pad operating at low rotor surface speeds is simulated on the PDP-6 digital computer according to a numerical procedure involving the solution of the Reynolds equation and the elasticity equation respectively by the finite element method and the finite difference method. The computed results compare very well with the experimental results. Multiple regression analysis is then applied to the computed data of the simulated pad to obtain design relationships between parameters affecting the performance of the pad.
