EFFECTS OF DYNAMIC LOADS ON THE GEARING OF A ROLLING MILL DRIVE.

Abstract


  • A rolling mill drive with branched gear train was simulated to study the external dynamic load due to torsional vibration on the gearing and shafts. The computer simulation compared very well with strain gage measurements on the shafts. It was found that backlash on the couplings and gears can cause tooth chattering, which produces high dynamic loads. Moreover there exists significant bias of dynamic and steady-state load toward the gearing at the branch point. In an effort to reduce the gear dynamic loads, the shaft stiffnesses were modified and damped flexible coupling was introduced. In addition, S/N fatigue life strain gages were mounted at the root of the gear teeth to provide a qualitative comparison of the dynamic loads on the two branched gear trains.
