Performance of elastically deformed hydrodynamic thrust bearings

Abstract


  • In this paper results from experimental studies and computer simulation of hydrodynamic diaphragm thrust bearings are presented. The bearing performance in terms of film thickness, pressure, friction coefficient, and bearing temperature were measured in a high speed thrust bearing test rig. The numerical simulation involves the solution of the generalised Reynolds equation, the elasticity equation and the energy equation, which allows for thermal effects on the oil viscosity.
