With the continuing industrial demand for increased production and improved quality control in rolling processes, computational models of high accuracy have become increasingly important. In order to investigate some of the computational strategies involved, this paper analyses some typical technological problems: the numerical simulation of the rolling of strips and strip with longitudinal ribs. Strip with longitudinal ribs has been developed in recent years. The main feature of rolling ribbed strips is the local perturbation in the deformation of a normal flat. It is a forming process that has the deformation characteristics of both strip and shaped section. The forming process was analysed using the rigid-plastic FEM, and some technological problems are discussed. Good correlation has been obtained between the numerical results and those obtained from experiments. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.
