Evaluation of adhesive joint performance in hostile environments

Abstract


  • The long term durability of epoxy-aluminium adhesive joints has been assessed as a function of the environment to which the joint is exposed, and by four different testing techniques. Tensile, creep and wedge tests all have disadvantages to varying degrees. In comparison, the double torsion fracture test was shown to provide a wealth of information concerning the performance of adhesive joints in hostile environments. This simple, short-term test allows the prediction of the time-to-failure of the joint; provides an assessment of the effects of the environment and stress level on joint durability; and enables the elucidation of failure mechanisms by giving a measure of fracture energy, induction time and crack speed.
