Experimental expert system for the design of column base plates

Conference Paper

Abstract

  • This paper describes the development of an expert system for the practical design of steel column base plates. A simple three stage model of the design process is proposed. This contains the preliminary design, detailed design and analysis and finally an assessment of the results. Knowledge bases are constructed using a frame representation. These are then manipulated by the inference engine to control the design. This form of knowledge representation is shown to be suitable for combining interdependent components and for specifying the types of analyses required. By separating the knowledge base from the controlling program the data can be added to and modified without difficulty. The program has been written in AutoLISP, the language associated with the computer aided drafting package, AutoCAD.
