Concluding, only to begin all over again

Chapter

Abstract

  • You might reme:rpber the rather strange case we mentioned in Chapter 6

[6.30]. A participant in an online game, who had been 'divorced' online, went

on to 'kill' her online husband's avatar. Her life in the game was so real that she

was prepared to 'murder' the avatar who had dumped her. The only crime she

actually committed was a real world crime: illegally accessing a computer and

manipulating electronic data (not, in fact, murder) .1 The law was not concerned

with the fictitious or virtual world which was so very real to her, meaning that

the offences under which she was charged seem to be a world away from the

actions she carried out, at least in a moral sense.
