Abstract

You might remember the story of the protestors who took action against
the NSW government, because of the government's attempt to limit their ability
to protest during Catholic World Youth Day in 2008. 1 The Federal Court clearly
stated that the law contained within it certain rights and freedoms assumed to be
available to everyone - including the right of free expression. Being allowed to
demonstrate- in this case to 'annoy' those against whom you were demonstrating
- was taken as a given by the court. 2 On the other hand, demonstrating and
violence or causing harm to others was not acceptable.
