The Melbourne Age newspaper of 4 February 2010 featured a photograph of
Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard during Parliamentary Question Time
wearing a brightly patterned jacket, which inspired one ‘Question Time tragic’
to suggest that it looked like she was ‘wearing a bucket of smashed lorikeets’.
Not content with that sartorial quip, columnist Tony Wright noted that he had
once run into trouble describing a ‘startling creation’ worn by Senator Amanda
Vanstone as ‘the exploding pineapple number’, only to be accosted the next day
by an irate Senator who let him know in no uncertain terms that it was in fact
a Versace interpretation of palm trees.
