Interstadial age (MIS5c) beach-dune barrier deposits in the Coorong Lagoon, South Australia

Abstract


  • Geomorphic inference of interstadial MIS5c sediments within the South Australian Coorong Lagoon is supported by the presence of a linear array of islands and other features, comprising aeolianite and calcrete, lying between and parallel with the Holocene Younghusband Peninsula and the Last Interglacial Woakwine Range coastal barrier complexes. A single published thermoluminescence age of 95 ± 6 ka provides numerical evidence consistent with this interpretation. The difference in altitude between the inferred MIS5c beach-dune barrier and that of the Last Interglacial MIS5e might signify an equivalent difference in the paleo-sea-levels for those times.
