Repecting patient autonomy

Journal Article

Abstract

  • Background: Over last two years, working with patients

and respecting their autonomy has been a rewarding experience

at Mirrabook mental health unit. However, it is true

that their autonomy has been overridden in their best

    interest. Where is the balance?

Objectives/Methods: We would like to debate this matter

and present the two sides of a coin and argue that

patient’s autonomy should be respected. We would do

literature search on this topic and present our personal

    experience.

Conclusions: Maintaining patient’s autonomy is a challenging

exercise while working in a complex and sophisticated

mental health and health system. It is about the

balance and is determined by a complex array of dynamic

    factors and keeps changing.
