In her perceptive introduction to the themed section of this issue, Stephanie Hemelryk
Donald reflects on the location of Chinese media studies within the academy. She describes
Chinese media studies as both a ‘sub-field in communications and media studies’ and as ‘an
increasingly popular aspect of area and language specific cultural studies’. This positioning
is very canny, straddling as it does two of the most significant Field of Research Codes
(FORs) with which those who have recently negotiated the 2010 Excellence in Research
Assessment exercise (ERA) here in Australia will be only too familiar.
