Investigating the effect of pounding and impact on base isolated adjacent buildings due to earthquakes

Abstract


  • In this numerical study, an investigation is carried out to analyze the earthquake induced

    pounding between two insufficiently separated base isolated buildings considering the inelastic

    behavior of the structures’ response. The base isolated buildings are modeled as a four-story

    and a three-story system to simulate the structural behavior. Moreover, non-linear viscoelastic

    impact elements are applied to model the collisions at different story levels using the Elcentro

    1940 earthquake record. The resulting systems of second order constant coefficient equations

    are reformulated as a system of first order ordinary differential equations and solved using the

    ordinary differential equation solver of MATLAB. The pounding behavior of the buildings has

    considerable influence on the behavior of the lighter building causing substantial amplification

    of the response and leading to considerable permanent deformations due to yielding. On the

    other hand, the behavior of the heavier building is nearly unaffected by the collisions between

    the structures.
