What is involved in the learning and teaching of writing?

Abstract


  • The learning and teaching of writing in the 21st century means extending our definitions and thinking about what writing is, and what is involved in the writing process, to a concept of text and design and writing as the production of multimodal text.This chapter expands on Chapter 2 by further exploring the practice of writing as the intentional, dynamic and socially situated production of text through a range of semiotic systems (eg linguistic, visual, audio, spatial and gestural). From a multiliteracies perspective, the concept of 'text' is considered in terms of its design elements but also in terms of the processes of design. Text design requires ongoing conscious and complex decisions, sometimes in collaboration with multiple producers (writers) and consumers (readers) of texts.
