Abstract


  • Approaches to the teaching of writing have changed over recent decades, reflecting shifts in understanding of what writing entails and in the theoretical perspectives influencing the teaching and learning of writing. This chapter begins with an overview of the main theories of learning that have influenced the teaching of writing, particularly in Australian classrooms in modern times. This is followed by a historical outline of the major approaches to the teaching of writing that have been applied in Australian classrooms in the last 70 years. The chapter concludes with a description of strategies that teachers can use to teach writing.
