Abstract


  • Emotion can be defined with reference to its input conditions, its characteristic output, and the internal mechanisms that mediate input and output. It is generally accepted that at least some emotion kinds are adaptive products of evolution. An appraisal that the environment affords an opportunity or threat is the input condition for such emotion kinds, and the output is some behavior that (if successful) constitutes an adaptive response to the situation. The internal mechanism prompting the adaptive action is a coordinated set of changes in appraisal, expression (facial, vocal), action tendencies (fleeing, threat displays), feeling, and physiological arousal that together explain how the adaptive response takes place and the...
