Understanding Emotion

Chapter

Abstract

  • In this chapter, we offer an account of children's emotional development that highlights some of its distinctively human characteristics. Darwin's (1998) emphasis on the continuity between men and animals in their expression of emotion and subsequent research on the nonverbal expression of emotion have tended to obscure those distinctively human characteristics. In particular, the way in which human beings talk about their emotions and reflect upon them in the context of a conversation has been neglected as a key aspect of emotional development.
