This chapter will outline the main fluids consumed as beverages in the diet and their effects and
contributions to overall health. Beverages such as water play an important role in regulating an
individual’s body water content to maintain normal bodily functions. While beverages such as milk and juice can add essential minerals and nutrients to the diet (e.g. calcium and vitamin C), some varieties
can contribute to excess calories, sugar and fat. Individuals need to take care when including alcohol
in the diet, as research has shown potential psychological and physiological side effects associated with alcohol consumption.
