A solar powered EV charging or discharging facility to support local power grids

Abstract


  • The use of residential photovoltaic (PV) system combined with a battery unit is increasingly utilized to make the local system less dependent on the utility grid. This paper presents the utilization of the electric vehicle battery (EVB) as a storage device in a home solar PV system. A novel solar powered electric vehicle (EV) charging or discharging facility to support the local power grids, while taking advantage of both the solar PV and the electric vehicle battery energy is presented and verified for a residential PV-EV energy system that comprises of a PV power generation and an electric vehicle battery unit. A scaled laboratory prototype is built to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
