Understanding self-determination: using theory and research to inform practice

Journal Article

Abstract

  • Self-determination is a term that is and has been used within the field of mental health for a number of years. The importance of self-determination within the area of health care is that it has been associated with a variety of positive outcomes, behaviours and experiences. For example, people who are highly self-determined are more likely to adhere to treatment, persist through challenge and be more physically active (Ng et al., 2012). While the aforementioned illustrates that importance

and relevance of self-determination, more inquiry and research to assist in understanding this dynamic construct within the field of mental health is needed. Therefore, the aim of this presentation is to (a) provide an overview of the concept of self-determination within the field of mental health and (b) provide applied/practical ideas that can be used to make meaningful influences on an individual’s self-determination.
