Visual Arts - Artwork in a Group Exhibition

Type Of Work

  • Visual Arts - Artwork in a Group Exhibition

Abstract

  • This collaborative work was selected for the 10th International Shibori Symposium - Shibori, Ikat and Sustainability: Land, Culture, and People held in Oaxaca, Mexico, 2016. ‘Orbs’ was included in the Contemporary Art of Shirobi & Ikat exhibition curated by the renowned Japanese scholar, curator and artist Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada at the spectacular Centro De Las Artes San Augustin, Oaxaca, Mexico. ‘Orbs’ draws on Golda’s and Johnson’s field studies in Arimatsu, Japan and Mt Keira, Australia to explore the creative, indexical and tactile capacities of shibori for responding to current global environmental challenges. In ‘Orbs’ they adopted Arimatsu's traditional sekka shibori (clamp resist), generally known as itajime technique and combined it with Australian native plant dyes - Eucalyptus and Casuarina, to evoke feelings of empathy for the natural world. Through the conjunction of these processes Golda and Johnson encourage eco-centric perspectives and promote ecologically sustainable practices.
